What’s a typical day like?
Imagine a customer who needs quality specialty tooling and equipment to complete a job. The mandrels they are requesting normally call for a 2 week lead time. The customer is asking if we can expedite the entire order and deliver within 5 days. The sooner they can get the tooling, the sooner they can start making money.
As the Inventory and Scheduling Manager, you analyze work in process to see if we have the quantities required for the mandrels. You analyze where they are in the manufacturing process. You look at your Planners Workbench and determine that there is enough quantity in process, and that the manufacturing process can be expedited for the mandrels. However, the best we can do is 7 days.
You then look at other options, such as tearing down tools in inventory that have the same mandrels. You talk with the Manufacturing Manager to see if current jobs can be interrupted to run these parts, or if anyone is available to work overtime to get parts to heat treat sooner. You also talk with the heat treat vendor to see what can be done there to improve lead time, offering them a premium to cover their costs. With the help of the Manufacturing Manager and heat treat vendor, the customer’s expectations can be met.
You contact Inside Sales and give them 2 options—we can deliver the entire order within 7 days at no additional cost, or we can deliver it within 5 days with an expedite fee. Inside Sales advises the customer, who decides not to pay the expedite fee and is happy with 7 days. The customer sends over the PO, and Sales enters the order, and contacts you that the order has been entered.
You then run MRP, and release all work orders associated with this sales order. The expedite order is completed within 7 days and ships to the customer as scheduled. The customer is so impressed with the quality of the tooling and the service they received they begin referring their co-workers from other locations to buy from us which leads to new opportunities.
Every day you will be doing work that really matters. You will be helping customers solve their business challenges. You will have an opportunity to do your best work and make a real impact.
